If you dog is afraid of anything, it is always best in my opinion to let the dog make the choice to “check it out” or not. I would never want my dog to feel trapped and afraid. So, I always want to give him a choice and if he wants to move away, I let him. However, if your dog does show interest in the scary thing, reward them for it. This will help them have a positive association with the scary thing and help build the dogs confidence. If you did not watch my video on Desensitizing a dog to the scary sound first, I would recommend that you do that. It is so important to take baby steps when dealing with a dogs emotions. When desensitizing your dog to sounds or objects, you are changing the way your dog thinks and feels about the scary or over arousing things. Take your time and go at your dogs pace. Make sure you have a high rate of reinforcement, especially in the beginning. Stop when you have had success, even if you feel your dog could do better or handle more. It is better to stop on a success than push the limits and have your dog react and start barking, regressing, whining, growling, lunging, or hiding. No reaction is a great thing! Good luck!
