For more information about this seminar series visit: www.jamesandkenneth.com Dr. Ian Dunbar explains that the best feedback for training is binary. It’s most important that we praise and reward the dog when they’re acting appropriately, but it’s also necessary that we punish dogs when they’re acting inappropriately. However, this punishment needs not be scary or painful, and it can even be instructive. Too many trainers use only rewards OR punishments, and they dispense them in sterile, quantum doses. The best training should feature continuous, differential, binary feedback, in the form of a trainer’s voice. Science-Based Dog Training (with Feeling)

This video shows some of the more common calming signals dogs display. Some of the video is from a Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) session with a dog who is aggressive towards some other dogs, and the rest shows dogs at a dog park. Recognizing calming signals is essential for appropriate use of BAT, and helpful in many other pet-friendly training techniques as well. For more information about BAT, you can peruse the information provided by Grisha Stewart (creator of BAT) here: ahimsadogtraining.com For information about BAT and other pet-friendly training for your pet, visit www.TheSophisticatedDog.com . A series of blog posts discussing BAT in layman’s terms starts here: willmydoghateme.com
