You will have to put the puppy in a different room and shut the door whenever you eat.
Ignore it. Sooner or later it will realize there is no food coming.
Get her a kong puppy toy from petsmart and the kong treats to stuff it with. It should keep her busy for around an hour the further you stuff it the longer it takes her to get it out.
Don’t yell, that will only confuse her and make it worse. Make sure she is fed last, this is vital to establishing your role as pack leader. Your’e just going to have to ignore her until she stops, it could take quite some time. You need to completely ignore her, do not look at her, talk to her, or yell at her. Eventually she will get the picture, it will just take time.
You still have a few options.
-Have her eat her food at the same time as your dinner. This way she’ll be focused on her own food. If she eats really fast though, it may not work.
-Ignore her. Don’t yell– it gives her attention. Don’t give her commands– it gives her attention.
-NEVER feed her from the table– ever. The only time she should eat is food from her own bowl at meal time or treats for obedience (never in the kitchen).
-At a last resort, keep her in her crate during meal time.
Don’t feed him at the table. If you wish to give him scraps wait until everyone is done & put them in his bowl.
ignore her or just put a gate so she cant get in the room that has food in it
Pet gate at the doorway to block her.
Just ignore it. It will stop eventualy. As long as no one feeds her from the table, it will stop. If anyone at all slips her anything, it won’t. So everyone in the family has to be on board with no feeding at the table rule.
Its going to be hard but you have to completely ignore her. I have 2 beagles so I know how hard it can be. If she jumps up then push her off, no I contact and dont speak to her either. She will get the message and eventually give up, but you have to make sure everyone does it, or it wont work…Good Luck
Training and consistent behavior
You now have a new puppy in the house and you need know how to take care of it. Almost everything you buy and use has some kind of instruction manual on its use and care. Puppies do not. You need to go out a get an “owners manual” for your new pup.
A good website with great articles on puppies and dogs is:
http://www.aspcabehavior.org/
There are many good books and DVDs on puppy and dog care and you should be able to find them at the library, bookstore, or at on-line retailers. (dogwise.com or amazon.com)
Some suggestions:
“Puppy Primer” by Brenda Scidmore and Patricia McConnell
“The Perfect Puppy” by Gwen Bailey
“Train Your Dog” DVD by Nicole Wilde & Laura Bourhenne
“Perfect Paws in 5 Days” DVD by Jean Donaldson
You should also look into an positive training class with a dog trainer by taking a dog training class at an local animal shelter, kennel or pet store.
You can find private trainers here:
Association of Pet Dog Trainers at: http://www.apdt.com/
Don’t forget to spay and neuter!
Good luck!
It depends on what was going on before if you have never feed her food she needs some more training with the sit and stay and dog should be able to stay for 30 minutes in one place. If you were feeding her while you were eating then that is what started the issue and you need to break a habit much harder then creating one. First of all never feed your dog while you are eating it only encourages begging. With my beagle I got her a bed and taught her evey time I say bed that is where she goes she lays down and stays. She must be trained to go, sit, and stay. If your dog starts to whine ignore her no eye contact nothing when she stops whining, begging say good girl and tell her to lay down. I find it acceptable for my dog to lay around me while I am eating as long as she is not whining or has a fixed stare. Also when she was at the point where she would not stop whining I would put her in her crate in view of me then when she stopped whining let her out. Once I finished eating that is when she gets a treat, or food. She associated it with I am good lay down and dont beg will my owner is eating and I get something after.
Beagles are notorious for their food drive. – Thats why they are used in most airports to detect food and other agricultural products people may be bringing in their suitcases. Buy a crate and put her in before you sit down for dinner.
My beagle is food drivin. she just sits there and watch you eat now. What You do is DO NOT give into the the sad look and whining that will just make it worse. We’re old fashioned, everytime she jumps up you smack her on the butt with a newspaper or hand would work too. When she begs just look away and contiune to eat. she’ll get the idea im not getting any of the plate. DOnt feed her/him off your plate thats a bad habit. You fed her and treats count too,in the kitchen away from were you eat your food.
