Beagles, YUCK!, THOSE YAPPING HORRIBLE DOGS. THEY ARE GOOD FOR HUNTING AND THAT IS IT!
Yes an obedience leash

Since “How do you train a dog?” requires a long, very long, answer, I’ll let one of these books answer that part:
“Clicking with Your Dog” – by Peggy Tillman – a great clicker-training book that is very clear for any style of training
“Dog Training for Dummies” – by Wendy & Jack Volhard – an excellent basic obedience book
I do, however, have some comments on training a Beagle in particular. When training a dog, it’s important to take into account what the dog was bred to do; in your case, your dog is a tracking/hunting dog, which means that he is strongly stimulated by smells and movement, to a lesser extent.
Because of this tendency, you may have difficulty with the commands LEAVE IT, DROP IT, and COME. Work on these “terrible three” a lot, and really set your dog up for success each time. Very few Beagles naturally will give up a yummy tidbit and very few have a reliable COME, so practice often and don’t trust him off-leash.
Another thing to keep in mind is what will work as a good reward for your dog. Some dogs love fetching, some love affection – your Beagle probably loves food! This is terrific because many Beagles will respond beautifully to plain kibble as a reward. You also have a lot of leverage – if you’re working on a tough command, perhaps the “terrible three,” you can use something simple to motivate your dog in training, like cheese, and he will think you’re a god!
Hope this is useful!
I have 2 beagles (1 and 2 years of age) both are male and the best result we’ve gotten with them is repetition. Just keep going over the commands with them and give them a treat they like when they do it correctly. Ice cubes work wonders because they love to chew everything. The sit command was the easiest because as we would say “sit” we’d push their butts down over and over again. Beagles are very stubborn so repetition is key. Never let them off leash, though because they won’t come back to you. Also, show him that you’re the dominant one in the house early on or else he’ll over-rule you. That’s what happened with our oldest and now he doesn’t take us seriously and thinks he owns the place. They are a great breed, though and give you tons of love and affection. They are prone to allergies, though, so watch out for excessive scratching. Both of our beagles are on allergy meds. Good luck!!
