I hаνе a seven year οld Toy Manchester Terrier, аnd аm buying a nеw Doberman puppy. Shουld I keep mу older dog around whіlе training thе puppy?
Prob not put one in a different room so the puppy doesn’t get distraced
Start off by training the puppy alone to prevent it from getting distracted. But once it is more experienced, bring the other dog as an example, especially if it is trained, so it can be used as an example, and as a distraction.
For me, my shih tzu, 5 years old, is quite afraid of my new choclate lab puppy. The Doberman will probably want to play and may bite playfully and this may be negatively recieved by the Toy Machester and he may start barking or becoming dominant like my dog did. I had to keep them seperated because their barking was annoying. When they are together just keep an eye on them and make sure they are getting along but when your training with your new puppy and want him to focus, the other dog could be a distraction so it may be a good idea to put him somewhere else with a toy or treat and make sure they get equal attention. Once your older dog has waited his turn it’s good to give him love too
