I have been thinking about getting a bunny for my birthday but I have two beagles and it’s in their nature to hunt them. Is it possible at all to get the pets to get along. I plan on keeping the bunny in the house with my two dogs. Otherwise I was thinking about getting a cat. What do you recommend?
of course…but of course it depends.. if you are planning on leaving the bunny in the cage most of the time you just want to make sure when the rabbit is out to watch carefully because you do not kno how the dogs will react..if they do not take well to the new additional pet then you will just have to let the rabbit out in one room locked away from the dogs….if your planning on letting the rabbit run free all the time then i would say no, your better off with a cat
You should be able to keep a rabbit, but you will need to take some precautions for its safety. Keep the rabbit in a room or area that the dogs cannot get to. Even if the rabbit is kept in a cage, there can still be problems if the dogs are around the cage all the time. Don’t let the rabbit out when the dogs are out. Put the dogs away or use a space the dogs are not allowed when you let the rabbit out. Don’t try to introduce them as instinct can take over very quickly. Work on training the dogs (one at a time) to leave the rabbit alone and that the rabbit is never to be chased or harassed.
While dogs and rabbits can get along, they should not be left alone together and you need to take precautions to keep all of them safe.
I have a bunny and a doberman pinscher! Believe it or not they are best friends. They lay together and play. Some dogs can sense when they are bigger that something. However, I do not let my bunny hop loose when my grandma’s lab is there because their natural instinct is to hunt and they aren’t exactly gentle.
I guess it just depends how your dogs temperment is:)
A rabbit and a dog can get along great together, I have a rabbit, lab mix, and an English cocker spaniel who are best friends. I would recommend getting a baby rabbit so it grows up with the dogs and will learn not to fear them, my dutch rabbit thinks he’s a dog since he has been with my dogs since he was 7wks old and now he Chases birds with them, eats food with them(of course they eat dog food though) and he once even tried to jump in a lake with them, he swam 3ft before getting out and patiently waiting by the shore for them to return:). Make sure your beagles and new bun are introduced to another slowly. If they don’t like each other then you could just keep the bunny in another room or something. Hope this helps(:
we had two beagles.one was trained too hunt.they never paid attention too the rabbits in cages.
