Using a whistle for an emergency recall – Clicker Dog Training Tutorial
www.pamsdogtraining.com http Find more games like this in my Play-N-Train Recall DVD. $25 and you can buy it on my website. www.pamsdogtraining.com The Whistle recall is a game to play with your dog, but it has serious meaning behind it. It is so important to be able to get your dog to come to you in any situation, especially a dangerous situation. The point is to teach a solid recall one that does not have any baggage or what clicker trainers call “poisoned cues”. A poisoned cue can happen due to many reasons. Reasons a cue gets poisoned 1. The dog associates the cue with something bad happening. For example: An owner calls their dog to come and then you give him a bath. The owner calls the dog to come and then you give him medication. The owner calls the dog to come and then puts him in a crate. The owner calls the dog to come and then does something that the dog feels is a punishment. Now the dog will not want to come because just maybe he will be coming to one of those bad things and in his mind it is better to just keep his distance or keep having fun. 2. The owner had asked for the cue over and over without the dog responding. Pretty soon the cue becomes white noise and the dog will not respond to it. 3. The owner calls the dog to come and the dog does not come, but when the owner does finally get the dog they are so mad at the dog for not coming and they punish him, yell at him, or worse yet beat him. What dog would want to come to a mad mean owner. If the dog …
@prettybeautyqueenify Thank you so much for your kind words! I am happy to hear that it is working for you! Keep up the amazing? work with your dog! Pam, Isabelle, Bandit & Twix
@pamelamarxsen Wishing doesn’t work. I tried it? with my dogs.
@JiveDadson I? wish I could use my built in whistle, but I have never been good at that.
Yes, I totally agree that if you are in an actual emergency situation that holding onto the dogs collar is a must! Thank you for reminding me. Sometimes I get so stuck into showing the progression that I forget some important pieces! THANKS! Have a great day!
Two suggestions: I use my “built-in whistle,” because I always have it with me. And it’s good and loud. Also, I think it’s a? good idea to give the treat after taking hold of the dog, perhaps by the collar. In an emergency situation, that could make all the difference.
Yes, they were a great distraction for Bandit. I train agility at the Canine Sports Center and that is where we were at. They have the greyhound? adoption center there and they must have 20 greyhounds in the back in kennels. So, for some reason they were all going crazy. I was very proud that Bandit could focus and work around that. Good real life situations.
u can hear? the dogs in the back
OMG, that story sent chills up my spine! That is just awesome! I could not agree more! It never hurts to have? a back up or emergency plan! Thank you for the amazing comment!
I HIGHLY recommend teaching this to EVERY dog! You never know when you might need it. My beagle got loose at camp and I didn’t know it. We? were surrounded by all types of wildlife and many acres of woods. I went out as soon as I realized he was gone, blew the whistle and prayed. I heard rustling DEEP in the woods & blew it again and called him. The rustling got closer and closer till he burst out of the woods at full speed! He got a whole stick of cheese in a long “cookie party”!
very good video I´ll try it and maybe I´ll make a video and upload it!? xD
5* and fav
Thanks for your reply pam !! cool video’s
do you use the? look at that game with reactive dogs?
Thank you! ? You are welcome!
I am so happy that you liked it. I hope it helps!? Pam
Yes, just keep conditioning it around low level distractions and slowly increase the level of distraction. If at any time your dog fails then go back a step and work more and more around what the dog will respond to. The idea is for it to become 2nd nature or muscle memory and when he hears the whistle there is only the reaction of coming to you. Keep doing it. It will work! Thank you for your comment!?
Great video pam. Ive been doing this with all my pack. Pleased Ive been doing it right! but im struggling to get them to respond? when around exciting stumli or other dogs..any ideas?
That was very informative about the ‘poisoned’ cue. I’m glad you put the info ‘out there’. Another great video from a true dog (pet) lover! Thank you!?
Wow Pam! What an amazing video!! And the description is really informative, thanks for putting so? much effort!
A great video, 5*s!
Yes that is a herding whistle. They are really hard to blow at first, so when you get one practice first without Jesse!
? I used to take it out on the PE fields and just blow it as my students practice football or whatever sport we were in.
I have not seen the dvd from dogwise. I know that there is a whistle recall dvd, for $20 on clean run. However I have not seen it. If you ever watch it, let me know what you learn.
Hi Pam, I have been? considering teaching this to Jessie. Is that a herding whistle you are using? I like the sound much better than the traditional whistle.
I ws looking at a dvd (from dogwise). Have you seen it?
Great video! This is so much fun to teach and amazing how well? it works.
Thanks so much for that information, that’s very helpful!
Zander really likes the frisbee and his tug rope as far as toys go(He goes nuts for the Frisbee, though)!? I intend on working more on him being somewhat of a disc doggy, but I need to work on my throws first! I just roll it most of the time, lol.
uh oh, now you have to get one. hehe! They really are hard to blow if you get a herding whistle. Practice first without your dog.
? Have a nice day!
The herding whistle is really hard to blow at first. Go somewhere and practice before you work on the game if you get a herding whistle. You could use a regular whistle that is easier to blow. It really is unique sounding and you can make so many different sounds with it. Of all the amazing prizes I give, Bandit still loves the ball the most. ? What is Zander’s favorite prize? Take care!
That is so awesome! I can get Bandit to come away from some high level distractions like Splash! It really is a fun game for both dog and owner! Hey, I just bought some products from that Olive company. Shampoo and a spray. Thanks for the info!
Kaine is such a sweetheart! I am happy he loves baths. So many dogs hate them. Mine do not love them, but they do? not mind them either.
Take care!
Thanks Perry!? Have a Merry Christmas!
