Tips for a beagle puppy?
he’s about 5 mo old.
We need tips on how to potty train him. make him hold his stuff til he gets outside.
My boyfriend and I do take him outsite to go potty but at night, when he’s not supervised, he goes in the house. We try putting him in his crate, but we end up not sleeping due to his all-night barking and when he does ‘go’ in his crate, we wash him to get rid of the ‘pee’ smell.
*by the way is it bad to wash him like that almost everyday? isn’t it ok still cuz we don’t use soap; just water?*
and another thing, is he supposed to be in his crate at night? because we really can’t sleep with the barking. we’d put him in the crate in the garage but it gets cold. what can we do about that?
idk if you notice the questions, so here they are again:

what to do if its raining outside & he has to go?
First and foremost, when you cannot watch the dog, i.e., at night or when you are not home, the dog needs to be confined to a crate or very small area. A dog will not typically soil their “home”, as they don’t want to be near it, either!
As for the crying, although it’s hard, ignore it. Make sure he has something in his crate for company, a toy or stuffed animal. He will learn to love his crate as his den, his safety zone. Never use the crate for punishment, and when you put him in his crate, give him a cookie for going in.
As soon as you get home, or when you get up in the morning, put the dog on leash, and walk them outside to a spot where you want them to go. Always go to the same area. This will become their potty spot, and will make things a lot easier for clean up. As you go outside with them, tell them to “go potty”. They will soon learn what this means, which will help in the long run.
As soon as they go outside where they are supposed to, a lot of praise, petting, and an occasional treat. This will reinforce that you are happy with them. Do this praise immediately, as a dog’s attention span is very short and if you wait, they will be happy you are praising them, but they will not know why you are praising them.
If the dog makes a mistake and goes in the house –
If you are there and see them start to go, tell them “no” in a firm voice, immediately take them outside to their potty spot.
If you do not see them actually in the act, then do nothing. Scolding the dog after the fact will not teach them, as they will not remember what they did and will not know why you are angry.
Do not give the dog food or water within 2 hours of bed time.
Get the dog on a schedule as soon as possible for feeding and potty times. The dog’s internal system will soon learn this schedule and they will be able to wait until their scheduled time.
For raining, does not matter. Rain, snow, bad weather, are all a part of being a dog owner – the dog still needs to go outside, regardless of the weather. Typically, if they are trained to go on command, it will make it easier in bad weather, as typically they don’t want to be outside any more than you do.
For washing – even though it’s just water, it’s not a good thing – it can cause skin dryness. Keep on eye on his skin, and any signs of flakes or itchiness, get a good conditioner.
Have you though about putting a dog bed for him in your bed room? Then he could be near you and if he needed to go out he could nuzzle you or cry near the door.
I wouldn’t wash him everyday. That could be harsh on his coat and skin. Depending on how much he is outside will help you decide on how much to bathe him, but I won’t think more than once a week.
Take an umbrella when it is raining for you and the dog. He will be more likely to go when he doesn’t have rain coming down on him.
Have fun- beagles are wonderful but they can be a challenge
One way to control peeing is to control water intake. They don’t need water constantly and puppies will drink water like an alcoholic if you let them. You can also slow down water intake by putting out ice cubes.
I paper trained my beagle to use the bathroom in a big box I put in her room to use at night full of scoop able kitty litter during the week then on weekends i would get up every hour and take her out side. Now she’s 3 and she goes outside all the time but she also sleeps all night now with radio on.
Yes it is bad to bathe your dog every day even if you don’t use soap it still dries their skin out.
If you can’t potty train him then yes he can be in his crate it won’t hurt him if he keeps you up turn on some music for him or try to put a blanket in his crate so he’s more comfortable he might not be comfortable.
Dry him off if its raining when he comes back in.
