How do you keep puppies from digging in tree/mulch area?

We have 8 month old dachshunds and my husband just put a stone circle with mulch around a newer tree we have in the backyard. Our puppies are inside and outside dogs, and he doesn’t want them digging in that area. I have heard that these types of dogs are naturally inclined to want to dig, so I’m thinking it would be tough to get them to not do it.
Any suggestions?
Most destructive behavior is born out of boredom. Abundant attention from you–plus ample mental and physical stimulation–will keep her content, fulfilled, and less inclined to dig or chew.

put a small fence around the mulch to keep the pups out of it…my pups grew out of it around 4 months old…but yes all pups dig…
