How will our 1 year old dog react if we bring home a new puppy?

We had 2 mini schnauzers, (brothers) but one died unexpectedly. Now we are looking for another dog to help heal the hurt, and so he (our dog) will have a friend. Our dog is a 1 and turns 2 in February. We were looking at puppies today, and don’t know if we should get one. Our dog weighs 23 pounds and DOES like to play ruff. He is a male too.
So if you could tell me what type of dog we should get, weight, age, and sex, that would be great! Thanks.
If he likes other dogs, I see no problems with it. Dogs usually scale their play to the size and ability of the other dog.
I do recommend that you get a dog of the opposite sex (as long as both are spayed and neutered) – opposite sex pairings do tend to get along better.
You can pretty much get any size dog you want – and a puppy or another young adult that likes other dogs would probably work fine. My golden retrievers play very nicely with friends who are a corgi, a whippet and a small shih tzu. He’s a medium size dog so a larger or smaller dog of any kind would be OK – it’s only an issue with extremely tiny dogs being paired with very large dogs that might accidentally hurt them. Your dog is large enough to play with bigger dogs safely.
AWWW IM A HUGE MINITURE SNAUZCHER FAN

and sorry bout ur doggie
I have a old dog and a puppy also. my old one is 12 and my puppy is 1. When I first got my puppy, my dog didn’t want to play with him but after a while, he liked playing with him.
Get a Shih Tzu, at least a few months- 1 year old dog and a male. Shih Tzus can weigh up to 20-25 pounds. Good luck!
If you are thinking about getting a puppy, what you need to do before you bring it home, is take your dog over to introduce him to the puppy. Let them sniff each other, and see how they get along. I would strongly suggest a female as your dog is a little older, but already is the dominate dog. A male probably will not work out as well. I would also get a dog that will be about the same size as your Schnauzer, but do get it as a puppy.I have no problems with older dogs except that they already have dominance issues. If you need further information, feel free to email me.
Probably a dog of the opposite sex would be best and around the same size. When you introduce them, do it outside on neutral territory so your other dog won’t feel like it has be invaded all at once. Let them sniff and play little bit outside first.
I think going with the same sex as the dog who past away might be a good idea… Also I’ve read that when you bring a new dog home it is highly recommended to introduce them on neutral ground! Instead of brining a new dog to your other dogs territory….take them both to a dog park and introduce them that way, or some place that isn’t in their environment.
If he likes to play rough I would think about getting something like a boston terrier, (they get in between 10-25lbs and they have a lot of energy, very playful) That would be my first recommendation for a breed to be a good playmate and new companion.
Read this:
Bostons are a very easy going dog and can adapt to almost any living condition. The city or country, apartment or mansion, but keep in mind they are inside dogs. They get along great with children, other dogs, cats, and other animals. They love to please you and will do anything to keep you happy. Nothing makes a better door bell than a Boston. As soon as there is a knock at the door most of them will come running and wagging their little stump tails to tell you about it. If you want a dog that will lay around with you all day, a Boston is your dog. If you want a dog to do agility with you, a Boston is your dog. They can and will do just about anything as long as you don’t try to take them swimming.

* I take my dog to a dog park and theres 2 boston terriers who go there frequently, they are so playful…they can handle any type of dog it seems like. My dog is calm and they usually sniff her and leave her, but other rough dogs they adapt and play really well with.
Secondly I would say, something like a french bulldog. Males reach between 22-28lbs.. Read this:
The French Bulldog is an extreme lover. He is affectionate, playful and demanding of attention, from all that he comes into contact with. He does not do well left alone in a backyard. A Frenchie needs the constant companionship of his family. He makes an excellent companion for children, although very small children may not tolerate his over enthusiastic nature. He generally gets along well with other animals, as long as they are of as playful a nature as he is. They are generally not given to excessive barking. http://www.terrificpets.com/dog_breeds/French_Bulldog.asp
