Beagle Puppy Advice Please!?

Hi, I’m going to be buying a Beagle Puppy in the near future and I was just wondering about a couple of things.
1) In your experience is a Male Beagle better than a Female?
2) What is the average upkeep of the dog weekly. (Eg. Food)
3) Should I buy a dog cage or Kennel for my dog?
4) Should I Buy from a breeder or shelter?
Thank you very much!
1. This is a very affectionate and loyal breed. They are also loud and LOVE to escape. Either gender is fine.
2. They also tend to love food and over eat and get fat. They aren’t a large breed so they shouldn’t eat a lot. We give our female beagle two handfuls. So her food lasts easily two weeks, maybe more. I don’t really keep track.
3. Definitely kennel it. When you are not home, they are very mischievous and tend to be chewers. Plus, you will probably get lots of complaints for baying.
4. Shelter shelter shelter. We got our beagle for free from some BYB, but there are tons of beagles in shelters. Probably because of the baying.
Also, make sure you have a fenced in yard. When a beagle gets loose, it finds a scent it likes and follows it. Could lead them right into the path of a moving car. They are not the easiest dog to train, especially when they smell something. But they are SO sweet, and very playful.
Good luck!
Either sex is fine. I tend to like male dogs best, but its up to you. They all follow their nose, and tend to wonder away alot so they require a lot of training and an especially reliable recall!
My Lab eats about one 30 pound bag of dog food a month he’s still a pup though) but i estimate it’s about 12 a week on food, 5 dollars on treats, and 5 on toys.
Yes, i would get him a crate as puppy’s are destructive and get in to everything left out, so for the sake of your shoes and his safety get a crate. Also. make it comfortable for you dog and he will view it as his ‘den’ and will love his own space!
Breeder or shelter. Good question. Do you want to show, or potentially hunt? if so then i would buy FROM SOMEONE REPUTABLE!!! With a breeder, you have a health guarantee (if you dont get one, wrong breeder!) you see the parents and see that they have no health problems, you can see his parents ddemeanor see where he came from, have someone to ask questions to and also have his registration (for show). If you just want a beagle and dont care about any of this, then a shelter all the way!
1 – personal preference really. I like females better because they don’t lift their legs on things, but if that’s not a problem..
Mine has also done things like eat the squeaker out of a toy, ingest medication taken off the counter, etc. If I hadn’t seen her do these things the vet bills could have been costly. I bought the cheap travel kennel and it’s fine. They only sleep in it anyway. Should be big enough to lay down, stand up, turn around, but not much more.
2 – My beagle eats high quality grain free food and goes through a 30 pound bag every two months..so it ends up being about $22/month
3 – Yes, definitely want a crate. No telling what harmful things they can find while you’re away. They’re good at jumping by kitchen counters and grabbing things off of them. Some people think they’re too short but unless you have high counters they’re fully capable
4 – Shelter, definitely. They don’t always make it out alive because they tend to have food aggression issues but if you find one that fits your situation, you’ll be saving a life. Plus it will likely already be spayed/neutered, microchipped, and have some vaccines. Microchip is important since they tend to follow their noses and have no problem following a rabbit down the street without you.
